Public Meeting Project
One of the responsibilities of citizens in America is to take an active part in their communities and government. There are many ways to do this: voting, community service, writing to government officials and by participating in public meetings.
The Assignment:
This assignment will give you an opportunity to attend a public meeting. Sometime throughout the course of the school year, you will attend a public meeting of YOUR choice in the community. It can be a school board meeting, county commission meeting or any other meeting that is pre-approved by Mr. Cohen.
The Requirements:
You must attend the meeting as an actual audience member
obtain some agenda, pamphlet, document, and have it signed by a Commissioner, or panel member to prove your attendance.
Complete the sketch of the meeting and the participants, and complete the questionnaire that includes many of the items below.
Keep in mind that one of the most important elements of your paper is to answer the question of what was decided at the meeting.
Include in your Essay -
What type of meeting is it? (school board, county commission, city commission, etc.)
Time, Place, Date of meeting
Who is running the meeting?
What topics are being discussed?
What was decided at this meeting?
Take note on audience participation: (is the audience asked to participate or are they volunteering information or neither)
Was the meeting formal or casual? Were there any particular procedures that were followed in how the items were addressed and/or debated about?
What specifically you thought was interesting, what you liked or did not like, etc.
The majority of your paper should be about the topics that were discussed and the decisions that were made. Even if they delay coming to a decision, that is the decision you should write about. Use the observation log and Sketch to help you prepare for your paper. A summary of the meeting, written using complete grammatically correct sentences, must be turned into Mr. Cohen. Typed, double-spaced, 12 pt Times New Roman font, standard margins, a cover page, more than one page no more than two pages. It must be handed in within one week of the meeting.
This will be graded under the projects category.
Your paper will need to be on top, with the Observation Log and Sketch, and then agenda behind it.
Tips
Obtain Proof that you went to the meeting. Get a signature from a member of the panel or commissioner.
Call to confirm the meeting time and location (the Commission will infrequently meet at an alternate location).
Arrive ON TIME and if you need to leave before the meeting has ended or to care for personal matters, do so quietly.
Remain quiet in the audience so that the business of government can carry on.
Please show respect; dress as you would for school and please do not bring food into the Chamber.
Use the Observation Log above to help you be ready for your essay. It also includes instructions about your sketch.
BONUS - 5% bump on project grade (100% maximum overall grade on project) if you get a clear photograph of yourself and a commissioner. Group photos are ok, but must be clear enough for me to see you or else you won't get credit. Please be kind when asking, if I get any complaint then I will suspend providing credit for the pictures. Picture must be printed and turned in with your work in order to receive credit. If more than one student is in the picture, each student must turn in their own copy of the photo in order to receive credit.
